manchester united vs real madrid in champions legue
been drawn against Real
Madrid in the last 16 of
the Champions League
while Arsenal face
Bayern Munich and
Celtic will play Juventus.
United boss Sir Alex
Ferguson will already be
looking forward to coming
up against Real manager
Jose Mourinho in what
should be two mouth-
watering encounters.
However, Ferguson will be
only too aware that
United have a poor
record against Real. One
of the classic contests
between the two teams
came in 2003 when
United crashed out 6-5
on aggregate in the
quarter-finals despite
winning the second leg at
Old Trafford 4-3.
Arsenal also have a very
tough test after being
paired with the runaway
Bundesliga leaders and
last season’s beaten
Champions League
finalists Bayern Munich,
who are 7.50 to win the
competition.
In 2005, Bayern edged
past the Gunners 3-2 on
aggregate, with Thierry
Henry’s second-half
strike in the home leg not
proving to be enough after
Arsene Wenger’s side had
lost the first clash in
Germany 1-0.
Celtic will have it all to
do to reach the quarter-
finals after being drawn
against last season’s
Serie A champions
Juventus, who were so
impressive in beating
Chelsea in Turin recently.
However, Neil Lennon’s
side will be full of
confidence going into the
games having performed
so well in the group
matches against
Barcelona, Spartak
Moscow and Benfica.
“In terms of glamour it is
great,” said Lennon. “In
terms of qualification it
is going to be very tough.
But we will take it as it
comes and our
supporters will be looking
forward to this match.
“Juventus are littered with
world-class stars and
they have been very
consistent over the last 18
months. But coming
through the group as
impressively as we did,
and you never know
where you are going to be
in a few months time.
“This club is built on the
legends of Jock Stein and
the Lisbon Lions, this
team is reaching those
same heights again. They
have belief in themselves
and have been playing
very well away from
home.”
Elsewhere Barcelona,
3.00 to win the
Champions League this
season, will play an AC
Milan side that has
struggled so far this term
while the 2004 winners
Porto face Champions
League newcomers
Malaga.
